What NOT To Do First Week of Freshman Year

As the countdown begins for your freshman year of college, you’re going to be hearing a lot of advice from a lot of different people. Some of it is good, some of it is great, and some you should avoid like the plague! Most of that advice will encompass your entire college career.

However, your first few weeks at college will often set the tone for your entire four years. Here are some quick “do not do’s” when it comes to your first week of school.

Don’t Skip Classes

Skipping classes is never a good idea, especially during your first week of school. While some professors will simply go over the syllabus that first class, many others dive right in. Whichever it is, it’s never a good idea to skip the class. You could miss valuable information that the teacher changes or goes over in the syllabus or you could miss foundation blocks for the entire course. You never know exactly what your professor is going to present to you in each class, so make sure to attend and show up prepared. Don’t make skipping a habit!

Your class may also have a restricted number of absences. By skipping that first week, you could be throwing an excused absence away you need later in the year for illness. Professors will often dock grades if you surpass this number.

Don’t Party it Up

Many students throw several parties the first week back from summer break. You may want to avoid these, especially if you think it’s going to set the tone for the rest of the semester. This is your time to get comfortable with your classes, your new friends, your dorm, and your college life.

Don’t head to a party to impress anyone. Like skipping classes, this is another habit you’ll want to avoid slipping into. College is about the experience, but it’s also more about your education. Focus on that, especially in the first weeks. Make good habits.

Don’t Sit in the Back of Class

Sitting in the back of the class is often a way to blend into your course and try to go unnoticed. While there will probably be no seating assignments, usually the desk you choose is where you will sit for the rest of the semester. Break the mold and sit a little outside your comfort zone.

That doesn’t mean you have to sit in the absolute front if you’re not comfortable with it. You may find yourself more involved if you just sit in the middle of the classroom. Take the first step towards being serious about your education.

These are only a few things you’ll want to avoid in your very first week at college. The first semester can truly set the tone for your entire stay at the school, so make sure you’re approaching it with the correct mindset. Experiences are great and they will make up a large portion of your college stay, but never forget that you’re there for your education and future. Make sure you’re taking it seriously!
