1. Meet With Your Academic Advisor (Review Degree Plan)

As you enter your senior year of college, one of the first steps is to review the classes required for graduation. This includes overall degree requirements (usually 120 credits), courses specific to your major, and any remaining general education courses. Every school is different, so you’ll want to familiarize yourself with their standards for graduation. Make sure to double-check that you have completed the necessary classes for your major—it’s not just about the number of credits!

If you have any questions or concerns about graduating on time or when you can take the classes you’re missing, schedule a time to meet with your academic advisor as soon as possible so you can get any problems sorted out. If you discover you’re missing some must-have classes and your schedule is tight, you may be able to take them in the upcoming winter or summer semesters, too.

2. Apply for Graduation

Believe it or not, graduation is not automatic at most colleges and universities. Students typically have to submit applications to graduate and receive their diplomas. This is to ensure that students have met their education requirements to graduate. It’s also to ensure all related and/or overdue fees are paid.

The deadline for submitting this paperwork will vary from school to school, so it’s important to be aware of it. If you miss this deadline, it could cause a delay in receiving your diploma.

3. Order Graduation Attire

Order your cap and gown through the college or its approved partner. Some schools may provide these items for free. If not, you may need to purchase them. Be sure to order these items in advance so they arrive on time for the ceremony!

4. Mail Out Invitations

If you plan to invite anyone to your graduation or celebration, send out invitations detailing the date, time, and location of the events. Try to send these out at least four to six weeks before graduation so your guests have plenty of time to plan their attendance, make travel arrangements, and RSVP. Consider inviting family, friends, mentors, and anyone else who has supported you along the way. Think of people who you wish to share this milestone with.
