Whether or not you can delete your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) depends on where you are in the process. If you haven’t submitted your application yet, you can delete it. But if it was already sent in, you cannot delete your FAFSA.
It’s essential that you get the information correct on your FAFSA form as it could affect your ability to get federal loans from the government, state aid, and financial aid from your school. Here’s what you need to know about the process and what you can do if you have noticed issues with your submission.
Can I Delete My FAFSA?
Whether or not you can delete your FAFSA really depends on where you are in the application process.
If you’d like to delete all of the information you have entered so far on your application, you can hit “Clear All.” It is located at the bottom of the page.
If you saved your application, it remains saved for 45 days before it is automatically deleted by the system. It will also be deleted if the application deadline passes before that 45-day period.
However, if you have submitted your FAFSA application, you cannot delete it. You can only edit or correct it.
Can I Edit My FAFSA?
If you have noticed you made errors in your FAFSA application or information needs to be updated, you can absolutely edit your application.
You should edit or make FAFSA corrections after it has been processed (3-5 days after submission) if:
Your financial details have changed.
- This will ensure you don’t have to pay any money back and you’re getting the offers you need to attend school.
- It includes dependency and income status changes.
You realized you added the wrong financial information.
- Entering in the wrong details can cause you to lose out on funding and face criminal charges.
You need to update the schools.
- Your FAFSA application is shared with your potential colleges. If you’re applying to another school, make sure they’re added to the list so you can be notified of potential grants!
- You can add up to 10 schools.
Your contact information has changed.
Always make sure to make any of these edits as soon as possible. You can make adjustments by selecting “Make Corrections” on the “My FAFSA” page.
If you have discovered you use the wrong Social Security Number (SSN), the fastest way to correct your application is to submit a new FAFSA form.
Can I Disable My FSA ID?
While you can’t delete your submitted applications, you can disable your existing FSA ID. This feature is helpful if you are worried about someone gaining access to your account or if you don’t intend to use FAFSA in the near future. You can disable it in your account. And, if you decide you need to access your account in the future, you can start the reactivation process by logging in in the future.
While you can’t delete your FAFSA application after you’ve submitted it, you can absolutely make edits and changes as necessary. It’s important, however, that you make the adjustments as soon as possible to avoid missing out on opportunities (or facing serious consequences).
Have you received financial aid offers from your colleges and not sure where you stand with them? That’s normal – they’re very complex! Our Financial Aid Offer Comparison tool will cut through the confusion for you.
