Mississippi Tuition Assistance Grant (MTAG)
Amount: $500 / $1,000
Deadline: October 1 to September 15
The Mississippi legislature created this grant to help Mississippi students pay for their college education. Available at $500 per academic year for freshman and sophomores, and $1,000 for juniors and seniors, it is renewable for up to eight semesters or until graduation–whichever comes first.
To be eligible for this grant, students must: attend a state-approved institution of higher learning, be a resident of Mississippi, either be a graduating high school senior or a current undergraduate student, have a GPA of 2.5 or higher, enroll full time, and also have an ACT score of 15 or higher / an SAT score of 1060 or higher composite.
Horatio Alger Mississippi Scholarship Program
Amount: $10,000
Deadline: August 1 to October 25
Up to $7,000 paid out in annual installments can be awarded to a student who has gone through significant adversities. This program created the scholarship to offer financial aid to those in need, who have overcome challenges, and who are also involved in community activities.
Requirements include: being a resident of Mississippi, having a GPA of 2.0 or higher, demonstrating critical financial need, and also having a strong commitment to pursue a bachelor’s degree.
Mississippi Eminent Scholars Grant (MESG)
Amount: $2,500 (renewable)
Deadline: October 1 to September 15
The annual scholarship looks for students who have shown academic excellence in their high school and/or undergraduate careers. It is also renewable up to eight semesters for Mississippi residents.
In order to apply, the student must: be a graduating senior or have graduated within the last three years, have a GPA minimum of 3.5, have either: ACT score of 29 or higher, an SAT score of 1280 or higher, or be a National Merit / National Achievement finalist or semi-finalist, plan to enroll in a Mississippi-based college/university full time.
Mary Loraine Peets Buffett Scholarship
Amount: $5,000
Deadline: March 8, 2020
The Southern Miss Alumni Association honors Mary Loraine Peets Buffett with a scholarship named after her. For freshmen students entering the University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Arts and Letters, definitely consider this scholarship.
To qualify, students must: have at least a 3.0 GPA, enrolled in the College of Arts and Letters, a supplemental item, and a short explanation of that item.
