5 Scholarships For Athletes

Athletic scholarships are some of the most competitive scholarships out there, with some of the top athletes in every field hoping to get college funding. The good news is, there are plenty of athletic scholarships that you can apply for, whether you are a baseball, football, or basketball player or your strength lies in swimming, gymnastics, or track events. Check out these scholarships for student-athletes.

The Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Program

Amount: $20,000

Deadline: TBD for 2020 (Opens Fall 2020) 

The Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Program lays great importance on academic ability, leadership skills, and community service. If a high school senior demonstrates all of these qualities entering a 4-year, accredited college in the U.S., they may qualify to apply for this very generous award of $20,000. This scholarship awards 20 students a year.

One student receives an additional $5,000 Ken C. Hicks Scholarship award every year.

The BigSun Scholarships

Amount: $500

Deadline: June 19, 2020

The Big Sun Athletic Organization helps young athletes learn and excel not just in the athletic field but also in the classroom and in the community. All high school seniors are eligible to apply for this annual scholarship. It does not matter which sport they participate in or their level of achievement in the sport.

As part of the application process for the scholarship, you must submit a 500—1000 word essay highlighting how your participation in the sport influenced you and your career goals.

Babe Ruth League Scholarship

Amount: $1,000

Deadline: June 30

Established in honor of the legendary baseball player, the Babe Ruth League Scholarship is open to students who participated in a Babe Ruth Softball, Babe Ruth Baseball, or Cal Ripken Baseball League anytime between the ages of 4 to 18. To apply for this one-time $1,000 scholarship, you must be a high school senior or enrolled at an accredited 2 or 4-year college. Along with your official high school transcript, you will need to submit a 200-word essay as part of your application.

Women’s Western Scholarship

Amount: $2,000

Deadline: March 15

The Women’s Western Scholarship is sponsored by the Women’s Western Golf Foundation. The Foundation offers $2,000, renewed over a period of 4 years. To be eligible for this award, you must be a female high school senior and an active golf player. Your golf ability will not be considered as a factor for selection. However, you must have a minimum 3.5 GPA or higher to win this award.

Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship Fund

Amount: Varies

Deadline: May 1, 2020

The Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship Fund was established by the Swim With Mike Foundation to provide physically challenged athletes with the financial resources they may need to realize their full potential. You may qualify to apply for this award if you participated in organized competitive athletics in high school or college and subsequently sustained a life-changing illness or accident that left you physically challenged. The award amount varies from one student to another.
