Going to college while maintaining good health is difficult enough for students without life-long diseases. Managing insulin and blood sugar levels on campus, away from family members who know exactly what to do should anything go wrong, can sometimes be a trick and a half. Financial stress can add to the problem, what with rising college costs and the cost of insulin. So here’s a list of scholarships for students with diabetes to hopefully reduce some of that stress.
Diabetics Scholars Scholarships

Diabetics Scholars offers multiple scholarships, and the foundation will post even more as 2020 passes. Dedicated to high school seniors who have type-1 diabetes, these scholarships give varying awards for a variety of students. The Diabetics Scholars only have one application for their scholarships. Filling out the application opens you up to any of the scholarships that you may qualify for.
ALA Century Scholarship
Award: $2,500
Deadline: March 1, 2022
The American Library Association Century Scholarship is for students with disabilities (diabetes is considered a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act) admitted to an ALA-accredited library school. The application period opens up in October. Students must demonstrate financial need, provide medical documentation concerning their disability, and be a citizen of the U.S. or Canada.
Diabetes, Incorporated Scholarship
Award: $1,000
Deadline: April 15, 2022
Members of Diabetes, Incorporated, have access to this scholarship. Applicants must be continuing their education past the high school level and must either have diabetes or have a close family member with diabetes. The scholarship award will be paid directly to the applicant’s institution of higher learning (half in fall, half in spring). Applicants may reapply each year for the scholarship.
Team Type 1 Scholarship
Award: Up to $10,000
Deadline: March 31, 2022
Recipients of this award will have $5,000 paid annually to their school, provided they continue to meet the criteria of the award. An applicant must have Type 1 diabetes, be a competitive athlete, maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher, attend (or plan to attend) and NCAA or NAIA institution, and be willing to commit to at least two Team Type 1 speaking opportunities. Applicants should want to use their platforms as students-athletes to inspire, as that is Team Type 1’s founding mission.
American Association on Health and Disability Scholarship Program

Deadline: March 1, 2022
The AAHD Scholarship Program gives an award to a deserving student in their second year of undergraduate studies. Students must be pursuing degrees related to health and disability, such as public health, disability research, and rehabilitation engineering. Applicants must have a disability under the ADA, be enrolled as full-time undergraduate students, and a U.S. citizen or legal resident attending an accredited U.S. university. Applicants must provide a personal statement, two letters of recommendation, official school transcript, documentation proving their disability, and agree to allow the AAHD to use their name, photo, and possibly story in future scholarship materials.
