Two dorms are set aside specifically for freshman students, the McCormick Road Dorms and Alderman Road Dorms. Alderman is usually called “New Dorms” due to their recent construction with hall style rooms, common areas, and modern amenities. McCormick, or “Old Dorms,” will see major renovation between 2017 and 2022. By senior year, students will hope for invitations to live on The Lawn, a great honor.
UVA is part of the Atlantic Coast Conference and has 25 varsity teams with 17 fitness centers and fields. The top sports include Football, Basketball, and Baseball. For less competitive students, intramural and club sports leagues are also available. Some popular choices are inner tube water polo, laser tag, flag football, basketball, dodgeball, softball, and more. Students have the opportunity to take part in one of the greatest fan bases with the ‘Hoos as well and show just as much passion as the athletes themselves.
The library system holds over 5 million volumes, 70,000 online books (which are open to the public), 350,000 images, and more. The Alderman Library is known for its Tibetan collection and stacks of historical pieces. The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library contains American Literature (including a previously undiscovered Robert Frost poem) as well as one of the original copies of the Declaration of Independence.
UVA also has a hospital on campus in the School of Medicine. Researchers have made astounding discoveries over the years including unknown vessels between the brain and lymphatic system which rewrote textbooks and aided in combating Alzheimer’s. Another discovery was investigation into 100 psychological studies and it was found less than half of them could be reproduced. The hospital itself is one of the highest ranked in the country.
With nearly 1,000 clubs and organizations on campus, UVA students will never be bored. Groups are dedicated to passions such as writing, music, dancing, exhibitions, fraternities, sororities, and more. A majority of students decide to dedicate their time to service, including the Peace Corps, Teach for America, and volunteer programs through the school. Off campus, students can take bikes or walk to town, restaurants, and shops.
